HMS Victory has anchored in the Bay of Athens for a recreational visit. Theseus, the ruler of the city, is to be married in four days' time, and great celebrations are planned. The “jolly jack tars” from the ship become involved in the festivities and merriment; complications and comedy follow. The action takes place in the grounds of the ruler's palatial residence, where fantastical situations draw in everyone from the opulently-attired courtiers to the coarsely-dressed craftsmen – with mischievous fairies complicating things still further.
